The Day Minnesota Was Colder than Mars

January 7, 2014

Polar VortexOur Compliance Director, Erica Brownell, recently moved to Monroe, Wisconsin, and is caught in the middle of the Polar Vortex that’s affecting much of the Midwestern United States and Canada. Yesterday it was -20 degrees F at her home, and the blowing snow drifts and cold temperatures froze the front door of her home shut!

Because of the storm and Erica’s stories (which we enjoy out here in Seattle, where our weekend was a balmy 36 degrees and sunny!), we started searching the internet for some of our favorite images and news stories about the Vortex.

  • The Daily Mail from the UK posted an article with these stunning photos of lighthouses in Michigan. These pics aren’t from this year’s polar vortex, but similar storms happen fairly regularly along the northern Michigan coast. Giant waves from the storm splashed over the lighthouses, turning them into huge, awe-inspiring icicles.
  • Did you know that it’s colder in some areas of Canada than it is on Mars? Canada is stuck in much of the Polar Vortex as well, and temperatures in Manitoba have been reported as colder than the surface of Mars.
  • Our Social Media Specialist, April Green, lives near Boston, MA, and has also dealt with freezing temperatures and frozen front doors (she sends her thanks to the hair dryer that unfroze them so they could get extra supplies at the grocery store). She took these amazing photos near her home!

As a word of caution, you can see above that fires can still start even in extreme cold. Keep your building temperature at least 40 degrees F to prevent sprinkler systems from freezing (and bursting when the weather or building warms up!).

One last note. I saw on the internet last night that many people were attempting to throw boiling pans of water into the air to see the steam that the freezing temperatures would create. This, as you may expect, resulted in a lot of people with serious burns. Please don’t attempt this!!!

If you’re in any of the affected areas, please bundle up and stay warm!

Why does your Compliance Director live in Wisconsin?

  2. January 9, 2014 8:05 am

After working in our Seattle home office for several years, our Compliance Director, Erica Brownell, relocated to the Midwest. Telecommuting from Wisconsin allows her to reach out in person to those subscribers and Compliance Services customers that we can’t easily meet with from Seattle. While she is enjoying success in the Midwest, we do miss her great sense of humor around the office!
